5 Tips to Prep Your Lawn & Garden for Fall
As September arrives, it’s the ideal moment to give your lawn and garden the attention they need before cooler weather sets in. We’ve recently showcased one of our clients’ lawns along with our own site, both fully prepped for fall, and they’re the perfect examples of how a little care now can make all the difference.
With the right steps, your outdoor spaces will stay healthy, vibrant, and ready to bounce back even stronger when spring returns. Here are our top tips to help you do the same:
1. Refresh Your Lawn Care Routine
Keep up with weekly mowing and trimming through October to maintain a neat look. Early fall is also the best time to apply a balanced fertiliser, helping strengthen roots before winter dormancy. Stay mindful of broadleaf weeds and pests, catching them now saves you bigger headaches later. And don’t forget: aerating in spring will give your lawn an even better start when warmer weather returns.
3. Add Seasonal Colour
Fall isn’t just about winding down, it’s also the perfect season to add pops of vibrant colour! In early September, try planting hardy blooms such as pansies, violas, asters, chrysanthemums, and ornamental kale. These flowers thrive in cooler weather, brighten up your garden, and support pollinators during a time when food sources are limited.
5. Winterise Your Irrigation
Don’t wait until the first freeze; schedule your irrigation system checks and seasonal adjustments early. Proper winterisation prevents costly damage and ensures a smooth start-up when spring arrives.
2. Tidy Trees & Shrubs
Pruning smaller trees (under 15 ft) and maintaining shrub beds in the fall helps plants conserve energy and remain resilient through winter. Through our Horticultural Stewardship Program, we use hydro-fertigation nutrition to provide trees and shrubs with a tailored boost, while also monitoring for pests and diseases so your landscape stays healthy.
4. Clean & Clear
Stay ahead of fall chores with regular weed control, debris removal, and leaf clean-up. (Tip: this is included in our Horticultural Stewardship Program!) Clearing leaves is more than just cosmetic, it prevents disease and stops your lawn from suffocating under a damp mat of foliage.
